The Pie is one of the icons of British cuisine. Savoury or sweet, hot or cold, the British eat millions of them every year.

The British Pie Awards held in Melton Mowbray, are a national celebration of British Pies in all their varieties and they have been running since 2009.

This year, Craig Hammond – Bistro Supervisor at Brunswick Village Bistro, transported his own creation down to Melton Mowbray for judging which took place on 15 September.

His “Cheese and Brunswick pie” was entered in two categories, Best Hot Savoury Pie, scooping silver and Best Vegetarian Pie taking Bronze. This is a huge achievement as there were literally hundreds of entries.

Craig said: “I’m absolutely thrilled with the results. And it’s great news for Brunswick Village Bistro, we can’t wait until we extend to opening to the public and customers can come along and taste it for themselves.

It’s the first time I’ve entered and won not once, but twice, I can hardly believe it! Well there’s only one thing for it now…I’ve got to go for gold next year, so watch this space!”

The Bistro, run by Age UK Manchester, is currently closed to the public due to the pandemic but we’re hoping it won’t be too much longer before it is open for you to come along and sample the pie for yourself. For more information, please contact Sue Agar at Brunswick Village on 0161 519 8867.

And from all of us here in Brunswick , well done Craig!
