Chorlton-on-Medlock Allotment Society

The Allotments and Community Orchard space and community facilities completed in 2021 as part of the PFI regeneration project. Twenty-five permanent new allotment plots have been created for Chorlton-on-Medlock Allotment Society (COMAS) and the Brunswick community.

COMAS has been in operation since the early days of S4B but did not originally have a permanent base, so were offered the chance to work from the grounds of the old S4B housing office on Bramwell Drive with their ‘Meanwhile Allotments’ plot, until the new allotments were built and ready to use.

The urban plots which sit in the heart of the neighbourhood and within walking distance of Manchester city centre, are allocated to residents on application and those who do not have a garden at their home are given priority.

As part of the annual housing event, Ocean Media had a number of live plants as part of the displays. They did not want the plants to go to waste so this opened up an excellent opportunity to gift the plants to COMAS for the allotments to help get things off the ground, to rehome the plants and also contribute to the Brunswick community.

The Community Orchard sits directly opposite the allotment site and has a range of fruit trees in the small park area which stands on former garage site and scrub land used only for parking before the regeneration. The site is home to apple, pear, and cherry trees along with seating, a place of calm to relax and reflect.

The city-sized allotments and orchard have been built along with many other improvements to green spaces across the Brunswick neighbourhood including: new play facilities for younger generations; improvements to the local park along with multi-use all weather sports pitches; installation of a community orchard; areas that have been pedestrianised and cycle lanes improved.
