Holocaust Memorial Day – Bridging Generations

27 January @ 8:00 pm - 29 January @ 5:00 pm

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2026 is “Bridging Generations,” a call to action for everyone to learn from the past and share stories across generations to combat prejudice and build a hopeful future, focusing on passing survivor testimonies and histories forward as the generation who experienced the Holocaust passes.

Key Aspects of the Theme:
Continuing Responsibility:

It emphasizes that remembering the Holocaust and subsequent genocides isn’t just for survivors but for all of us, including future generations.

Learning & Sharing:

Encourages actively listening to and sharing testimonies, ensuring vital lessons aren’t lost as survivors age.

Connecting Past & Future:

Builds a bridge between historical memory and present-day action for a more tolerant world.

Honouring All Victims:

Acknowledges victims who left no descendants and the ongoing impact of inherited trauma, notes Jewish News.

How it’s Being Observed:
Events:

Communities, schools, and faith groups will hold events focusing on storytelling and remembrance.

Light the Darkness:
Landmarks across the UK will light up purple at 8 pm on January 27, 2026, for a moment of national reflection against hatred, according to the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.
