In 2014, as part of the community regeneration of Brunswick, a wonderful Bee carving was produced all courtesy of skilled chainsaw artist Karl McCauley

Now ten years on, the chainsaw carving was in need of a little TLC so chainsaw artist Karl, was asked to return to Gartside Gardens to carry out a little nip and tuck to bring the bee back to its former glory. It forms part of a series of events hosted by S4B over the last twelve months to bring together local residents in celebration of ten years of the regeneration of the Brunswick neighbourhood.

S4B Neighbourhood & PFI Contract Manager, Ross Hemmings, said “We initially commissioned Karl in 2014 as part of the annual community fun day celebrations, when he created this masterpiece and it has stood proudly in Gartside gardens ever since.

“It really is standing the test of time but has been looking a little weathered recently, so thanks to some funding provided by Manchester City Council for an art project introduced as part of the S4B 10-years celebrations, we were able to ask Karl to come back to give the Bee a bit of well needed tlc so it lasts another ten years and beyond.

“The results are fantastic and it really looks great. It’s a real focal point of the park and was completed just in time for this years fun-day hosted by our local tenants and residents group in the park. This is something for the whole community and visitors to enjoy and I’m sure they will agree it looks amazing”.

Chainsaw artist, Karl MacCauley, said:” I was really pleased to be asked to come back to carry out some refurbishment work on the Bee. It has lasted well over the past ten years but it did need a bit of a facelift, and it will last so much longer now.

“It’s a great example of what Brunswick is all about, the design was the result of a competition held at the local school ten years ago, so it means so much to so many people in the area – I feel very proud to have been a part of it all”
