S4B are working in partnership with Full Circle Learning Limited and have developed a Skills Academy pilot project.
The idea of the project, which started in June, was to provide residents from the Brunswick area with the opportunity to develop skills to help them obtain a work placement or apprenticeship in the construction industry.
There were four students on the pilot course and all passed with flying colours. They were presented with their certificates by Lee Smith, Mears Operations Director and Steve Muscroft. Full Circle Learning Limited Managing Director.
The pilot course was run over two weeks and taught the students a range of construction and health and safety skills. The learners were supported throughout the course and they all achieved a BTEC Level 1 in Construction. They also passed the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) test to enable them to apply for their CSCS site cards.
The CSCS site card provides proof that individuals working on construction sites have the required training and qualifications. Most contractors and construction clients insist that workers on their sites hold the appropriate CSCS card.
The course covered a variety of basics including carpentry, joinery, bricklaying and plumbing by providing a mixture of theory and practical learning. The students were able to practise their new skills by renovating empty properties and getting them ready for new tenants.

I’m delighted that Mears are working closely with other organisations to achieve the vision of creating training and employment opportunities for younger residents.
The pilot scheme was very well received with positive feedback from all the students; one has already been in contact with us to find out when they can take the next level.”
Steve Muscroft, Full Circle Learning Limited Managing Director said: “The pilot scheme was a great success and we are really proud of what has been achieved by the students. Both Mears and Full Circle Learning Limited have gained a great deal from this experience. This will enable us to develop even better courses in the future and help more young people find employment in the construction industry.”
Jamal, a student who took part in the project said: “I really enjoyed the course, the training was very helpful and I learnt new skills. The course helped me to secure a job with Mears and I will be taking my driving test soon which will open up more possibilities for the future. ”
